Team Stethocloud wins national finals of the Imagine Cup:
Microsoft's Imagine Cup has been described as the Olympic Games of the software world. Each year it brings the best of the world's student talent to bear on some of the world's biggest problems.
The University of Melbourne's "Team Stethocloud" has just won the right to represent Australia in the world finals in July. Starting from a suggestion from A/Prof Jim Black, this joint medicine/computer science team has built a means to diagnose pneumonia even in remote rural areas of developing countries. Their microphone-enhanced stethoscope and smart phone application guides the user to record sounds from a child's chest and upload them to a cloud server for sophisticated mathematical analysis. The final diagnosis is beamed back to the phone and the app guides the user in the correct treatment.

Good luck to Team Stethocloud for the finals in Sydney! The Stethocloud project is linked to the Nossal Institute's programme of work in Low-Cost Technology for Health in Developing Countries, and has the potential to make a huge contribution to the control of pneumonia – currently the world's biggest killer of children under the age of five.
