Mia is a Senior Program Officer at the Nossal Institute for Global Health. With a background in law and international development, Mia’s work in global health explores gender, age and inclusion as determinants of well-being. She is engaged in teaching and professional training on the gender and human rights dimensions of global health, particularly child and adolescent health and development, and HIV. Mia also conducts assessments on the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the context of significant transitions such as climate change, migration and post-disaster development, giving prominence to the first-hand accounts children and young people themselves.

Mia’s recent consultancies in the area of gender include: Appraisal of Design on Integrating Gender Based Violence Screening into Antenatal Care in Fiji (AusAID); Gender Equity and Disability Inclusion Specialist, Tonga Health Sector Support Program Review (AusAID); and Gender Assessment Coordinator, HIV/AIDS Asia Regional Program (HAARP) (AusAID).

She was the study team leader on three recent UNICEF studies: examining the impact of climate change on children in the Pacific nations of Tuvalu and Kiribati; assessing the impact of climate change on nutrition and migration affecting Indonesian children; and a multi-sector analysis of the status of women and children in Aceh Province, Indonesia - six years on from the tsunami. She has co-created and delivered training modules on adolescent and youth development for East Asia and Pacific UNICEF and UNFPA staff, and undertaken program level evaluations in the areas of youth participation, citizenship and protection.
