Welcome : Professor Graham Brown
When I joined the Nossal Institute for Global Health as its inaugural Director in 2006, the University had an established reputation for its international contribution to global health through the commitment of many dedicated and skilled staff. After these busy, productive and enormously satisfying years we are well on the way to multiplying these contributions, and providing a focus for new initiatives.
In years to come our contribution to the many major health challenges in the Asia-Pacific region and Africa will largely result from the commitment and enterprise of people from these regions who have worked and trained with us, together with the contribution of Australian experts from many disciplines who have joined us. The international partnerships we have established to tackle problems of global significance provide the framework for our work that embraces medical and social sciences, clinical disciplines and evidence-based development practice.
Our objectives are closely aligned to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. This commitment, together with our efforts to highlight neglected areas of need, draws upon a multi-disciplinary approach with partners in Australia and overseas, recognising the significant contribution to health gains made from outside the health sector.
I would like to thank the many individuals who have helped us since we began our journey. Particular thanks go to our partners for their support - government, research funders, communities, philanthropic organisations, and individuals - for without them we could not hope to achieve our goal of improving the health of people whose needs are greatest.
