Climate change and health
Climate change is recognised as a major threat to global health, with The Lancet (May 2009) focusing on six potential adverse health outcomes of climate change: changing patterns of disease and mortality, food security, water and sanitation, shelter and human settlements, extreme events, and population and migration. The Nossal Institute is responding to the challenge of climate change by focusing on health-related issues in three broad research areas: adaptation to climate change, and in particular the responses of primary health care; mitigation of climate change through development of more environmentally sustainable health services (green clinics and green hospitals); and community education and transformation, with a focus on the health co-benefits of lifestyle changes and the mental health impacts of climate change.
