Non-communicable diseases

Non-communicable diseases are reaching epidemic proportions. Cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke), some cancers, chronic respiratory conditions, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases cause a high proportion of death and disability, accounting for around 60% of all deaths worldwide. Some 80% of chronic-disease deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

The Nossal Institute's health promotion activities include policy, program and advocacy work in tobacco control with the South East Asian Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA), and the International Union for Health Promotion and Education.

DPHP unit staff have been intimately involved in the development of Australia's National Preventative Health Strategy, which focuses on the primary prevention of disease associated with obesity, tobacco and harmful alcohol use.
