Disability-inclusive development
CBM Partnership |
Interview with Pauline Kleinitz | Disability in Developing Countries Special Interest Group
In recognition of the need for increased capacity across both disability and development sectors to build disability-inclusive development practice and research in Australia and the Asia Pacific region, the Nossal Institute has formed a partnership with CBM Australia.
The CBM-Nossal Partnership draws on strong technical expertise to support capacity building of individuals and organisations working within the sector, and offer needs assessments and tailored formal training, organisational policy and tool development, as well as technical advice on development programming and research. The CBM-Nossal Partnership also conducts short courses in disability, and regularly arranges forums and seminars to develop knowledge and networks.
The Nossal Institute coordinates the Disability in Developing Countries Special Interest Group, a network of professionals with experience and interest in disability inclusive development; and runs Australia's only accredited post-graduate subject in this sector, "Disability in Developing Countries" [Contact for Special Interest Group: Joni Law, email: jycl@unimelb.edu.au].
The Nossal Institute fosters professional development within the Asia Pacific region. Under the auspices of AusAID's Australian Leadership Awards the Institute has hosted participants from the NGO sector and Disabled Persons Organisations including East Timor for a program on disability inclusive water and sanitation.
With funding from the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), The Nossal Institute for Global Health, in collaboration with the Centre for Eye Research Australia, both entities of the University of Melbourne, is developing and validating a practical toolkit through field testing in Bangladesh and Fiji, which will allow Governments and development agencies to design and measure the effectiveness of disability-inclusive development initiatives.
