Rights and participationIDPU Rights and Participation

Rights-based approaches set out to foster meaningful engagement and participation, so that people are provided with the space and resources to shape the decisions and initiatives that affect their lives. The Nossal Institute's approach to program implementation and capacity development prioritises the engagement of partner organisations and community representatives - such as networks for children and youth, women, persons with disabilities, and people living with HIV - within research activities and within the planning, design and implementation of its programs. A rights-based approach is guided by the principles of non-discrimination, equity and accountability, and it consciously avoids and seeks to redress marginalisation and exclusion.

Consultancies undertaken with an explicit, rights-based approach include: the Development of the Monitoring and Evaluation System for the Disability Rights Fund; Situation Analysis on Women and Children in Aceh, and two Assessments of the Impact of Climate Change on Children - Pacific region and Indonesia for UNICEF; impact assessment of a National Child Parliament Program in Bangladesh, and evaluation of the Youth at Risk Project in Laos for Save the Children.
