Come rain or shine: building the resilience of Indonesian children to climate change
This study forms part of a multi-site research initiative led by the UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO). UNICEF commissioned a series of studies to examine the empirical evidence on the probable climate change impacts on children, as well as children’s adaptive capacity to climate threats. Studies were commissioned for Viet Nam, Mongolia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and the Pacific Islands. The objective of the Indonesia study, undertaken by Nossal Institute in partnership with the National Institute of Health Research and Development in Indonesia in May 2011, was to explore children’s vulnerabilities to climate change and disaster impacts in Indonesia with a focus on children’s health and nutrition, and urban-rural migration dynamics.
The aims of the study included the following:
- To compile evidence on the impacts of climate change and disasters on children’s rights and vulnerabilities in Indonesia.
- To produce recommendations for further research on the availability and appropriateness of data, gaps in knowledge, and relevant policy gaps relating to children and climate change.
- Understand children’s vulnerability, their adaptive capacity and how UN/UNICEF programmes and policy influence can improve their ability to cope with future climate change.
