South Asia Region

The Nossal Institute for Global Health now encompasses the programs and activities of the Australian International Health Institute, which has been active in South Asia for more than 25 years. The Nossal institute's approach is to engage with national partners to ensure that strategies to address health and development challenges are locally owned and appropriate to the local context. Funding agencies and partners hat support the work of the Institute include AusAID, DFID, UNODC, UNAIDS, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and local and international NGOs.

The Nossal Institute's continued commitment and engagement with India and national partners is reflected through agreements with the Public Health Foundation of India, the Emmanuel Health Association, MAMTA Health Insurance for the Mother and Child and the Jamkhed Comprehensive Rural Health Project in Maharashtra. The Nossal Institute has recently registered as a trust in India and has a small office in New Delhi.

Over the past 50 years, substantial health gains in South Asia have included increased life expectancy, and reduced infant mortality and fertility rates. However, the persistence of communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, as well as the emergence of non communicable diseases represent challenged to health and well being.
