HIV prevention, treatment and care
Nearly 30 years since its discovery HIV remains a major cause of death and disease throughout the world, particularly in developing countries. The Nossal Institute's work is focussed on reducing HIV transmission among injecting drug users through projects such as the Gates Foundation funded Project ORCHID in North East India and the AusAID funded HAARP program in South East Asia. The Nossal Institute's program also focuses on sex workers, men who have sex with men, migrant workers, and on improving adherence to HIV and AIDS therapies. The Institute's interests also encompass intersecting issues such as law enforcement, illicit drug policy, gender and human rights.
The Nossal Institute's DPHP unit combines research in South East Asia, North East India, China and Africa, including two AusAID funded Australian Development Research Awards, with education (undergraduate, postgraduate and in-service courses), resource development (teaching manuals and a course for the UN system), development practice (HIV prevention and harm reduction programs in NE India and SE Asia) and policy advice.
